Hello, everyone! How are you doing? I’m Yuia from Te Kuiti. Now, the rugby world cup is on in Japan so I often see news about Japan on TV. It is a little bit odd to see or hear about Japan from outside. A news reporter who went to Japan said “In Japan, everything is covered with plastic!” so I was embarrassed and surprised because I thought we were trying to reduce plastic. It’s great that I can know how our country looks like from the world.
Anyway! 9 months have already passed since I came to NZ and I don’t have much time left here. I have been having great days thanks to host family and friends and today I would like to share a part of my wonderful life with you guys.
My life here is full of Music! I’m taking a music class and playing the euphonium. When I told my music teacher that I could play this instrument, she was really surprised because apparently I was the first student who plays it. We went to the school shed and hunted for a euphonium. It was so much fun to clean an old instrument and make it shine! Now “he” is my wonderful buddy as I have come through lots of music events with him 🙂 I have participated in the showcase, concerts, and competitions. I would love to tell you guys about each single event but it would take a long time so I’m going to tell you about my favorite event, which is the showcase! It is one of the most exciting school events and lots of students play instruments or sing songs on the stage. Students start practicing music from term 1 for this event which is in term 3. You can see how important this event is for them! When I knew that I was going to play music on the stage I was really scared!! However, as I kept practicing, I found that there was nothing to be scared of but a chance to enjoy playing music with friends. I could make good friends through music and first of all I got confidence! I totally agree that music is a great tool to make friends. We had two days for performance and on both days I had the best time with the best musicians (my friends). I played 8 music pieces in total including one duet. I was exhausted when the showcase was over but everyone said “You were doing great!” so I was really glad and felt lucky to be a part of this wonderful event!
At this moment, I can’t imagine life without music as I’m loving my life full of music, but actually I didn’t mean to take music class as I wanted to take hospitality class. I don’t know if it was an unfortunate or fortunate, but there was no vacancy in hospitality class. We don’t know what’s going to happen in our life, right?
Living in NZ far away from family and friends is not easy. At the beginning of this year, I sometimes regret coming to NZ but now I can say that it was the best decision I’ve ever made to come to NZ!! Thank you so much, my family and teachers in Japan, for supporting me so much. Thank you for reading. I hope you guys enjoyed my essay! See you in November.

皆さんこんにちは、お元気ですか？テ・クイティに住んでいる結愛です。今、日本ではラグビーワールドカップが開催されているので日本についてのニュースをよく見ますが、違う国で自分の国について見たり聞いたりするのは何だか変な感じがします。ある日、日本を訪れたリポーターが「日本では何もかもがプラスチックで包装されている！」と言っているのを聞き恥ずかしく思い、また自分では日本もプラスチックを減らそうと努力しているものだと思っていたので驚きました。世界から日本がどのように見えているのかを知れる ことは本当にいいことだなと思いました。
さて、話は変わりますが、ニュージーランドに来てからもう9ヶ月が過ぎ、帰るまでにほとんど時間がありません。ホストファミリーや友達のおかげで、ここに来てから今まで素晴らしい毎日を過ごせています。そこで今日は皆さんに私のニュージーランドでの生活について少し話したいと思います。
NZでの私の生活は音楽で溢れています！私は音楽の授業をとっていて、ユーフォニアムという楽器を演奏しています。初めて音楽の先生に「ユーフォニアムを吹けます」と伝えたとき、どうやらこの楽器を吹ける生徒はテ・クイティハイスクールでは私が初めてのようで、驚いていました。学校の倉庫で楽器を捜索し、古びた楽器を磨きあげるのは楽しかったです!今ではこのユーフォニアムはすっかり私の相棒となり、一緒にショーケースやコンサート、大会などに参加してきました。皆さんに一つ一つ詳しく話したいのですが、きっとそれは時間がかかりすぎるので、今回は私のお気に入りのイベント、ショーケースについて話したいと思います！これは、最も盛り上がる学校行事の一つで、たくさんの生徒が楽器や歌をステージ上で披露するものです。 生徒たちは、ターム3（3学期）にあるショーケースのためにターム1（1学期）から練習を始めます。この学校行事が生徒たちにとってどれだけ重要なものかわかりますよね!私もステージ上で演奏するのだと知ったときは気後れしましたが、練習を重ねるうちに、人前で演奏することは何も怖がることではなく、友達と演奏する楽しさ与えてくれる機会なのだと知りました。実際、ショーケースの練習を通していい友達が作れ、何より自分に自信がつきました！音楽が友達作りの良い方法であるというのは本当だと実感しました。ショーケースは2日間にわたるイベントでしたが、2日間とも最高のミュージシャン達（友達）と最高の時間を過ごしました。私は合計で8曲演奏し、終わったころにはクタクタでした。ですが、たくさんの人に「とてもよかったよ！」と言ってもらえ、本当にうれしかったです。また、このような素敵なイベントに参加でき、恵まれているなと思いました！
今となっては音楽のない毎日は考えられませんが、実はここに来た当初はホスピタリティー（家庭科の調理実習）の授業をとるつもりで、音楽の授業をとる気はありませんでした。幸か不幸か、そのときすでにホスピタリティーの授業の定員が埋まってしまっていて、取れる授業が音楽しかなかったのです。人生何が起こるかわかりませんね。
家族や友達から遠く離れてニュージーランドで生活するのは簡単なことではなく、当初はここに来たことを後悔することもありました。しかし、今では留学することを決めたのは今までで最良の決断だと胸を張って言えます。日本の家族や先生方、支えてくれありがとうございます！また、皆さん私のエッセイを読んでくれてありがとうございます。楽しんでもらえたらうれしいです。では11月に会いましょう！
