Mizuki

Hello, everyone!! 

I’m Mizuki Amaya and I am a Year 11 student at Waiuku College.  I’ve been here for about five months.  I really enjoy staying in New Zealand.

Have you read the messages from my friends?  Their messages are amazing, aren’t they??  I don’t think I can write well like them, but I will try very hard, so please read my message.

I have a dream of becoming a flight attendant.  I’ve been thinking about it since I was twelve years old.  As you know, flight attendants speak very good English and I admire how perfectly they talk in English with foreign people.  In order to be a flight attendant, I need to be able to speak English well.  That’s why I decided to go to Jin-ai Girls’ High School and study in New Zealand.

I started to study English when I entered junior high school.  In high school, I studied English much harder.  I studied English every day so that I could lead a successful life in New Zealand.  Before I left Japan, I set a goal : “By the time I come back to Japan, I will be good at speaking, listening, writing and reading English.”

However, in spite of my four-year-study of English, I couldn’t make myself understood in English and I couldn’t understand anything at all when I arrived in New Zealand.  Actually in February and March, when I talked to my friends, they said “Ha???”, and I could not understand what they were talking about.  It was really embarrassing and I was very upset.  Also I was afraid of making mistakes.  Even so, I didn’t give up.  I never thought, “I don’t want to talk to kiwis any more.”  I do like talking in English and I always try to talk to my kiwi friends and my host family.  If I don’t understand what they are talking about or I don’t know the meaning of a word, I ask them and they explain to me with easier words so that I can understand.  Kiwi people are really kind and they never think it is very troublesome to explain it to me.  They always try to understand me and communicate with me.  I don’t think my English ability is good enough, but thanks to my host family and my friends, I can feel my English speaking and listening skills improving day by day.

Now I enjoy talking not only with native people but also with other international students.  We have our own languages but we can talk in English.  It is interesting, isn’t it?  I can talk about my own county and I can learn about other countries.  It is fun to understand that there are many different cultures in the world.  I’d like to talk more with more people.

On the other hands, I am not good at reading and writing English.  Every time I try to read English, I feel really tired.  Even when I get a piece of paper to read in class, I usually don’t read it.  However, when I took the geography exam, I had to read a two-page-long newspaper article.  I regretted that I had not practiced reading harder.  Of course, I could not pass the exam.  It took me a long time to read the article, so I didn’t have enough time to write down my answer. 

When I came here, my host family lent me a book called “TWILIGHT” to me.  I started to read it, but it was too difficult to read it.  I had to use my dictionary many times, so I gave up reading it.  However recently I’ve  started to read it again to improve my reading skill.  I was surprised because I can read much better than before.  I feel really good!  I’ve read up to page 203.  My goal is to finish reading the book I am reading now and to start reading the twilight second series “New Moon” before going back to Japan.

I usually can’t keep doing something longer than a day or two.  For example,  I had never kept a diary.  My family knows that very well. Hahaha lol!   However,  I’ve been keeping my diary in English since I came here.  

　Do you know what the exams are like in New Zealand?  In New Zealand, there is a lot of free space on a test where students are supposed to write their opinions.  It means that I have to write down my opinions on a test.  Speaking of exams, guess what!!!  I made it!!  I got a MERIT on the math exam.  In Japan I hated math.  No matter how hard I studied, I could not get a good scors.  Do you think math exams in New Zealand are just to test your ability to calculate??  NO WAY!!  We have to explain many things in English to solve questions. HAHAHA:D  If I didn’t keep my diary, I couldn’t have written down my answers and couldn’t get a merit. 

I think my English skill is improving day by day.  Still there is a lot of things that I have to study.  I will keep making an effort so that I can achieve my goal which I mentioned above.  And also I keep trying to do my best to realize my dream in the future.

Now I really appreciate this chance of staying and studying here in New Zealand.  I can have this valuable experience abroad thanks to my family, my friends, teachers and people who support me.  I really want to say “Thank you” to everyone.  I’ll try my best the rest of my New Zealand life.

私は天谷瑞葵です。ワイウクカレッジのyear11に所属しています。ここに約５ヶ月います。私はニュージーランドでの生活をとても楽しんでいます。

私の友達からのメッセージを読みましたか。とてもうまく書けていますよね。私は、それほど上手に書けませんが、がんばって書くので、ぜひ読んでください。

私は、キャビンアテンダントになりたいと思っています。１２歳からそう思っています。ご存知の通り、キャビンアテンダントの方々は英語がうまく、外国の方々と英語で話している姿に私はあこがれています。キャビンアテンダントになるために、私も英語がうまくならなくてはいけません。だから、仁愛高校に来て、ニュージーランドで勉強することにしました。

私は、中学校に入学したときに英語の勉強を始めました。高校では、もっと英語の勉強を頑張りました。ニュージーランドでうまくやっていけるように、毎日英語を勉強しました。そして、日本を発つ前に、「日本に戻ってくるときには、英語のスピーキングも、リスニングも、ライティングもリーディングも上達していたい」という目標を立てました。

しかし、４年間英語を勉強していたにも関わらず、ニュージーランドに着いた当初は、英語で自分の言いたいことを言うこともできず、全く何も分かりませんでした。実際、２月や３月には、友達に話しかけると、「はっ？」と言われましたし、友達が何を話しているのか分かりませんでした。とても恥ずかしく、戸惑いました。そして、間違えるのも嫌でした。それでも、私はあきらめませんでした。「もうニュージーランドの人たちとは話したくない！」と思ったことは一度もありません。私は英語で話すのが好きなので、いつもニュージーランドの友達やホストファミリーに話しかけるようにしています。みんなが何を話しているか分からなかったり、単語の意味が分からなかったりしたら、質問すれば、みんなは、私が分かるようにもう少し簡単な言葉で説明してくれます。ニュージーランドの人々はとても親切で、私に説明するのが面倒だとは思いません。いつも私の言いたいことを理解しようとしてくれ、私と話そうともしてくれます。私の英語力は十分だとは言えませんが、ホストファミリーや友達のおかげで、私のスピーキング力とリスニング力が日に日に伸びているのを感じています。

今は、現地の人とだけでなく、各国からの留学生と話すのも楽しいです。それぞれの母語は違っても、英語で話をすることができます。おもしろいと思いませんか。自分の国のことを伝え、他の国について学ぶことができます。世界には、違った文化があるということを知るのは楽しいです。もっと多くの人ともっとたくさん話をしたいです。

一方で、私はリーディングとライティングが苦手です。英語を読もうとするといつも疲れてしまいます。授業で読むべきものをもらっても、私はあまり読みません。しかし、地理の試験を受けたときは、２ページもある新聞記事を読まなければいけませんでした。もっと読む練習をしておけばよかったと後悔しました。もちろん、試験には合格できませんでした。記事を読むのに時間がかかりすぎて、答えを書く時間がなくなってしまったからです。

私がここに来たときに、ホストファミリーが”トワイライト”という本を貸してくれました。その本を読み始めましたが、難しすぎました。辞書を何度もひかないといけなかったので、すぐ読むのをやめてしまいました。しかし、最近、リーディング力をつけるために、もう一度その本を読み始めました。前よりもすらすら読めることにびっくりしてしまいました。気分がいいです。203ページまで読み終わりました。日本に帰るまでに、今読んでいる本を読み終わり、第２巻を読み始めるのが今の目標です。

私は、何事も三日坊主です。たとえば、今まで日記を続けたことはありません。私の家族はそのことをよく知っています。でも、ここに来てからは、英語で日記を続けています。

皆さんは、ニュージーランドの試験がどのようなものかご存知ですか。ニュージーランドでは、試験には、生徒が自分の意見を書くような解答欄がたくさんあります。私も自分の意見を書かないといけないということです。試験と言えば、いい報告があります。私、頑張ったんです。私は、数学のテストで合格点をとりました。日本では、私は数学が大嫌いでした。どんなに勉強しても、いい点数をとれませんでした。ニュージーランドの数学の試験は、計算力だけを測るものだと思いますか。全くそうではありません。問題を解くのに、たくさんのことを英語で説明しなければならないのです。もし、日記を書き続けていなければ、私は答えを書けず、合格点をとれなかったと思います。

私の英語力は日々伸びていますが、まだまだ勉強すべきことがあります。先ほど書いた目標を達成するために、私は努力を続けます。そして、将来の夢をかなえるために頑張ります。

私は、今ここニュージーランドに滞在し勉強できる機会を得たことをありがたく感じています。私が海外でこのような貴重な経験ができるのも、家族や友達、先生など、私を支えてくれる人たちのおかげです。みんなに「ありがとう」を伝えたいです。残りのニュージーランドでの生活を頑張って過ごします。
