From NZ (Aoi)

  The sentences above are written in Maori, meaning “Greetings to you all. My name is Aoi, and I am well. I go to Tauraroa School.”

  Let me introduce myself again in English. I’m Aoi. I go to Tauraroa Area School in Whangarei as a year 12. I’ve been here for about nine months. I don’t feel like I’ve been here for such a long time. Today I’m going to talk about the things that I’ve learned so far in my study abroad life.

  Firstly, I’ve learned and realized heaps of things so far but the biggest thing of these is the importance of my family. As my host family’s rule, I have to make dinner every Tuesday, but it’s really hard to decide what to make and to make for six people. In Japan, my mum makes breakfast, lunch and dinner for five people every day without saying anything. I think I was not mature enough when I was in Japan. I took it for granted but now I know I shouldn’t have. I’m grateful to her. I feel it hard for me to make dinner only once a week, so it must be even harder for my mum to make meals every day for five people. Now I miss my mum’s meals so much. Once I go back home, I want to help her to make meals.    

  Secondly, I’ve got a lamb for “country day.” I named the lamb Otis.  He is very handsome and smart but it was really hard to look after him when he was little. I had to feed him every four hours, so I used to wake up in the middle of night and I couldn’t get enough sleep. In the beginning, he couldn’t stand and drink properly so I struggled with feeding him. But he has been growing day by day, and he can drink and stand properly now! So it has been easier to feed him. I’m pretty sure that I was like him and my parents must have struggled to look after me when I was little. I’m grateful for that as well.  

  Finally, I’m going to introduce my bestie, Skye. When I look back, there are heaps of memories of us! She is in the same year as me. I always hang out with her at morning tea and lunch time. She is kindhearted and funny, and also gives me a shoulder to cry on. I’ve been helped by her thousands of times. When I talk to her, I feel blessed. I love the time with her. I value our encounters.

  My study abroad life hasn’t finished yet and I have about one month left, but I have heaps of things that I’ve learned. In this study abroad life, I think not only my English but also my mind has grown up. The time with my host family and friends here obviously won’t last forever and it is limited. I want to value the time with them and make great memories with them! My to do list with them is full and I want to do all of the things that are written on the list. I love my family and friends.

皆さんこんにちは。あおいです。私はファンガレイのタウラロアエリアスクールにyear 12の生徒として通っています｡ここに来て約9か月になりますが、これほど長くいるとは感じていません。今日は留学生活でこれまでに学んだことについてお話しします。
　まず、これまでにたくさんのことを学び、気づきましたが、その中で一番大きかったのは家族の存在です。ホストファミリーのルールで、私は毎週火曜日に夕食を作らなければならないのですが、何を作るか決めるのが本当に大変で、6人分作らなければなりません。日本にいたときは、母が何も言わずに毎日5人分の朝食、昼食、夕食を作ってくれました。日本にいた時の私は未熟だったので、それが当たり前だと思っていました。でも今は当たり前ではないとわかっています。母に感謝しています。私は週に1回だけ夕食を作ることでさえ大変だと感じているので、5人分の食事を毎日作るのはとても大変だと思います。今では母の食事がとても恋しいです。家に帰ったら、母が食事を作るのを手伝いたいです。
  2つ目です。私はカントリーデーのためにラムを飼っています。名前はオーティスです。オーティスはとてもイケメンで賢いのですが、彼が小さかった頃、世話するのが本当に大変でした。4時間おきに餌を与えなければならなかったので、夜中に起きなければならず、十分な睡眠が取れませんでした。初めのうちは、立って飲むこともできなかったので、餌を与えるのに苦労しました。でも、オーティスは日に日に成長し、今ではちゃんと立って飲めるようになりました！だから、餌を与えるのが楽になりました。私も彼と同じで、両親も私が小さい頃の世話に苦労したに違いありません。そのことにも感謝しています。
　最後に、親友のスカイを紹介します。振り返ってみると、私たちの思い出が山ほどあります！彼女は私と同じ学年です。私はいつもモーニングティーとランチタイムに彼女と過ごします。彼女は優しくて面白く、悩みを聞いてくれます。彼女には何千回と助けられてきました｡彼女と話していると、幸せを感じます。私は彼女と過ごす時間が大好きです。この私達の出会いを大切にしたいです。
　私の留学生活はまだ終わっておらず、あと約1ヶ月ありますが、これまでの留学生活で学んだことはたくさんあります。この留学生活で、英語だけでなく自分自身も成長したと思います。ホストファミリーや友達と過ごす時間は、永遠に続くものではなく、限られています。彼らと過ごす時間を大切にして、素晴らしい思い出を作りたいです！彼らとのやりたいことリストはいっぱいで、それに書いたことはすべてやり遂げたいです！家族と友達が大好きです。
