From Yuna in New Zealand

Hi! Yoza! I’m Yuna. Half a year has passed since I came to New Zealand. It is quite cold here now.

Firstly, let me introduce myself. I live in Whangarei, which is surrounded by nature. It’s attractive because there are so many amazing beaches. I love this city and I miss summer very much. I’d like to share my recent happiness with everyone. The other day, I became seventeen years old!! The dancing queen! My friends, teachers and host family celebrated my birthday. I’m super happy to have turned 17 years old in New Zealand. 

Next, I’m going to talk about my school. I go to Pompallier Catholic College as a year 12 student. As you can see, my host school is a catholic school. We have some Christian events. I participated in one of the big events as a speaker. Our school has many students from other countries. We spoke our mother languages to pray. It was a great opportunity to participate in a school event. As for classes, drama class is my favorite class. We always practice performing in the class. In the last term, we performed Shakespeare in a small group. In this term, we are practicing a comedy drama. My classmates are wonderful actors and I admire them. Acting and pronouncing words are really difficult for me even now.  Fortunately, my classmates and teachers are very kind and they teach me. I like the time when I practice with them. I think drama class is special for me. Also, I enjoy playing netball, which is a really popular sport here, with my teammates. We have netball games almost every Saturday. When I see them at school, they say “a good game’’ to me. I like to play netball with them. 

I would like to introduce my lovely host family. There are eight members in my host family, host mother, host father, three host brothers and three host sisters. I live with my host mother, father, two of the host brothers, an international student from Brazil and a dog. The other host siblings live somewhere else, but they often come back home. My host family is always lively. Both of my host parents are very family oriented. When they get together at home, it is like a party. In March, we went on a family trip. One of my host sisters graduated from university, so we attended her graduation ceremony. Also, we visited Hamilton, Rotorua, and Auckland. I made great memories with my host family. This trip became a great memory which I’ll never forget. My flat mate is a sweet girl. Her name is Debora. She is my host sister and best friend as well. I love the time that we spend together. I’m glad that we naturally became good friends and became like real sisters.

Studying abroad had been my dream since I was a child. I wanted to be able to speak English fluently. I wanted to communicate with people in English. I wanted to make many friends in foreign countries, and I wanted to experience foreign culture. That was why I came to New Zealand. Fortunately, I’ve had a lot of experiences which I can do only in New Zealand since I started living here. I really enjoy my life in New Zealand. On the other hand, there are many difficulties which I need to face. It takes a lot of courage to try something new. Sometimes I feel down. However, I think I can make progress through overcoming these difficulties. “A moment of courage, an experience of a lifetime.” I think I’m growing up, influenced and inspired by many people. They change my mind positively and make me happier. 

I think life is full of meeting new people and parting ways with many others. I’ve already said goodbye to my oldest host brother and his partner, and I need to say it to my favorite flat mate soon. This is really sad, but more than anything, I am so happy to have met them and made a lot of fantastic memories. I never imagined I would meet such wonderful people when I was in Japan. 

Also, I have realized how important my family and friends are to me. I am grateful to my family and teachers for giving me such a great opportunity.

I can’t believe that I’ve already spent half a year. It means I have only the other half year left for me to stay here. I’m going to enjoy my life in New Zealand even more‼︎

Additionally, I was a little bit nervous to write this essay because I’ve been reading the essays from NZ since when I was a junior high school student. I’ve admired my seniors. I hope you have enjoyed reading my essay and that it will be of some help. Thank you for reading.

こんにちは！ 私はゆなです。ニュージーランドに来てから半月が経ちました。こちらはかなり寒いです。

まず、自己紹介をさせてください。私は自然に囲まれたファンガレイに住んでいます。素晴らしいビーチがたくさんあるのが魅力的です。私はこの街が大好きで、夏がとても恋しいです。私は最近の幸せなことを皆さんと共有させてください。先日、私は17歳になりました!!ダンシングクイーン!私の友達や先生、そして私のホストファミリーが私の誕生日を祝ってくれました。ニュージーランドで17歳になることができてとても幸せです。

次は、私の学校についてです。私は12年生としてポンパリエ・カトリックスクールに通っています。お分かりの通り、私のホストスクールはカトリックの学校です。キリスト教に関するイベントがいくつかあります。前回、私たちは話し手として大きなイベントの1つに参加しました。私たちの学校には、他の国から来た多くの学生がいます。私たちはそれぞれの母国語で祈りを捧げました。学校のイベントに参加する絶好の機会でした。授業の中では、ドラマが私の一番好きなクラスです。学期中ずっと演技をしています。前学期は小グループでシェイクスピアを演じました。今学期はクラス全体でコメディドラマを練習しています。私のクラスメートは素晴らしい俳優であり、私は彼らに憧れます。演技の仕方と言葉の発音は今でも本当に難しいです。幸いなことに、私のクラスメートと先生はとても親切で、それらについて教えてくれます。私は彼らと一緒に練習する時間が好きです。ドラマの授業は私にとって特別だと思います。また、私はニュージーランドで人気のあるスポーツであるネットボールをチームメイトと一緒に楽しんでいます。ほぼ毎週土曜日にネットボールの試合があります。私が学校で彼らに会うと、彼らは私に「良いゲーム」と言ってくれます。私は彼らとネットボールをするのが好きです。

次に、私の素敵なホストファミリーを紹介したいと思います。私のホストファミリーは８人いて、ホストマザー、ホストファザー、3人のホストブラザー、3人のホストシスターです。通常は、ホストマザー、ファザー、2人のホストブラザー、ブラジルからの留学生と犬と一緒に住んでいます。他の兄弟は他の場所に住んでいますが、よく家に帰ってきます。私のホストファミリーはいつも賑やかです。私のホストの両親は二人ともとても家族思いの人たちです。皆が集まると、パーティーのようです。3月、私たちは家族旅行に行きました。私のホストシスターの一人が大学を卒業したので、私たちは彼女の卒業式に出席しました。また、ハミルトン、ロトルア、オークランドを訪れました。ホストファミリーと素晴らしい思い出を作りました。この旅行は、私は永遠に忘れない素晴らしい思い出になりました。私のフラットメイトは素敵な女の子です。彼女の名前はデブラです。彼女は私のホストシスターであり、親友でもあります。私は、彼女と一緒に過ごす時間が大好きです。私たちは自然に良い友達になり、本当の姉妹のようになることができて嬉しいです。

海外留学は私の小さい頃からの夢でした。英語を流暢に話せるようになりたい、英語で人とコミュニケーションを取りたい、外国でたくさんの友達を作りたい、外国の文化を体験したい。このような理由で、私はニュージーランドに来ました。幸運にも、私はニュージーランドでしかできない多くの経験をしてきています。私はニュージーランドでの生活を本当に楽しんでいます。一方、直面しなければならない多くの困難もあります。新しいことに挑戦するには多くの勇気が必要です。時々落ち込むこともあります。しかし、私はこれらの困難を克服することで成長することができると思います。「一瞬の勇気で、一生の経験」ができています。私は多くの人々から影響を受け、刺激を受けながら成長しています。彼らは私をポジティブに変え、私を幸せにしてくれます。

人生は多くの人との新しい出会いと別れでいっぱいだと思います。私はすでに私の一番上のホストのブラザーと彼のパートナーに別れを告げました、そして私はすぐに私の大好きなフラットメイトに別れを言う必要があります。これは本当に悲しいですが、何よりも私は彼らに会い、たくさんの素晴らしい思い出を作ることができてとても嬉しいです。日本にいたとき、こんなにも素晴らしい人たちに会うとは想像もしていませんでした。

また、家族や友人が私にとってどれほど重要であるかを理解することができました。このような素晴らしい機会を与えてくれた家族と先生方に感謝しています。

もう半年が過ぎたなんて信じられません。つまり、ここに滞在できるのは半年しかありません。私はニュージーランドでの生活をもっと楽しみます！

最後に、私は中学生の頃からここに掲載されているエッセイを読んでいたので、自分がこのエッセイを書くのに少し緊張しました。私は先輩に憧れていました。皆さんが、私のこのエッセイを楽しんでくださり、少しでも役に立ちますように願っています。読んでくれてありがとうございました。
