From NZ(Chikako)

Hello, guys! How have you been? I’m Chikako and I go to Pompallier Catholic College in Whangarei as a year 12 student.
Firstly, I am going to talk about my host family and my friends. I live with my host parents, 3 host brothers, 3 host sisters and a dog. The youngest host brother is the same age as me and my host mother works at my school. My host family likes shopping, so we often go shopping together.
Fortunately, I was able to make friends at an early stage and I enjoy my life in NZ. They are so funny, and they make me happy. They teach me lots of things, so I think my English skill is getting better thanks to them. Actually, at first, I didn’t understand what they said, so it was hard for me to spend time with them, but now, I really enjoy talking to them. When I am in need, they always help me, so I really appreciate their help. I’ll miss them when I go back to Japan…. I wish I could go back to Japan with them.
Next, I am going to talk about the memories I have experienced. First, I‘d like to talk about the school ball. It’s like a party. The theme of the school ball in 2023 was “A Night in Paris”. The venue decoration and lighting were also gorgeous, so I was impressed. We danced, had some food and took photos at the photo booth. Everyone was beautiful and wonderful. We said “You’re gorgeous” to each other. I don’t know much about western music, so I didn’t know most songs. However, when the music that I know came on, it was fun and awesome. I have good memories of jumping in a circle with everyone, and I think I was able to get along with some of my friends with whom I had a bit of a wall. After the ball, I looked at the photos with my friends. I jumped a lot, so my feet hurt but I had a great time.
Second, I’d like to talk about haka. I don’t take Maori, but we had haka competition at school. We separated into our houses and performed haka. We practiced it every Friday morning. Remembering haka and Maori words were hard for me, but it was a good time. I had never felt Maori culture directly, but I felt it directly for the first time. All the students performed hard, so I was impressed. My house, Chavoin, didn’t get first place. However, because I had a great time, it didn’t matter to me. If I hadn’t come to NZ, I couldn’t have experienced this event, so I thought it was good to come to NZ.
Third, I’d like to talk about netball. Netball is not popular in Japan. It is a sport like basketball, but it is very different. It’s hard to explain. Anyway, I really enjoy playing netball. We have some games every Saturday. When I had a close game, it was hard, but I felt a sense of accomplishment. It’s hard to understand the rules, but once you can understand them, it’s really fun! If you study abroad in NZ, you should play it! I recommend it to you.
To be honest, studying abroad is not all fun because of things such as food and language. However, if you can think positively, you can overcome the difficulties.

みなさんこんにちは!お元気ですか?ファンガレイのポンパリエカトリックカレッジに 12 年生として通っている千佳子です。
はじめに私のホストファミリーと友達について話します。私はホストペアレンツ、3 人の ホストブラザー、3 人のホストシスター、1 匹の犬と暮らしています。一番下のホストブラ ザーは私と同じ年で、ホストマザーは私が通う学校で働いています。私のホストファミリー はショッピングが好きなので、私たちはよくショッピングにいきます。
幸運なことに、私は早めに友達を作ることができ、ニュージーランドでの生活を楽しんで います。彼らはとても面白く、私は嬉しいです。私にたくさんのことを教えてくれ、彼らの おかげで私の英語力が伸びていると感じています。実は、最初は彼らが言っていたことは全 然理解できませんでした。だから彼らと過ごす時間は結構大変でしたが、今は彼らと話すの を心から楽しんでいます。私が困っている時にいつも助けてくれるので本当に感謝していま す。日本に帰ったら、私はきっと寂しく思うでしょう。彼らと一緒に日本に帰りたいです。
次に私が経験した思い出について話していきます。 一つ目は、スクールボールです。それ はパーティーのようなものです。私の学校の 2023 年のテーマは”パリでの夜”でした。会場 の飾りつけやライトアップもとてもすごくて感動しました。私たちは踊ったり、食べたり、 フォトブースで写真を撮ったりしました。みんな綺麗で素晴らしかったです。私たちはお互 いに ゴージャスだね!」と言い合いました。私は洋楽については詳しくないのでほとんど が知らない曲でした。しかし、知っている曲が流れた時は、とても楽しく最高でした。みん なで輪になってジャンプしたのはいい思い出で、少し壁があった友達とも仲良くなれたと思 います。ボールの後は友達と一緒にボールの写真を見ました。たくさんジャンプしたので足 が痛くなりましたが、とてもいい時間を過ごしました。
二つ目は、ハカです。私はマオリの授業をとっていませんが、学校でハカの発表がありま した。私たちはそれぞれのハウスに分かれて、ハカを披露しました。毎週金曜日の朝に練習 しました。ハカやマオリの言葉を覚えるのは難しかったですが、いい時間でした。私は今ま で直接的にマオリの文化を感じたことありませんでしたが、初めて直接的に感じることが できました。全ての生徒が全力で踊っていたので感動しました。私のハウスの Chavoin は 1位を取ることはできませんでしたが、すてきな時間を過ごすことができたので、賞が取れ なかったことはさほど問題ではありません。ニュージーランドに来ていなかったら、このイ ベントを体験できていなかったので、留学に来て良かったと感じました。
三つ目はネットボール です。ネットボールは日本では人気があるスポーツではありませ ん。バスケットボールに似ているスポーツですが、全然違います。説明するのが難しいです。 とにかく私はネットボールを楽しんでいます。毎週土曜日に試合があります。接戦の試合の 時はきつかったですが、達成感を味わうことができました。ルールを理解するのは難しいけ れど、理解できたらとても楽しいです!もしニュージーランドに留学するならネットボール をしてみてください。お勧めします。
正直なところ、留学は楽しいことばかりではありません。食べ物や言語など様々な理由が あります。しかし、ポジティブに考えることができれば、乗り越えることができます。
