From NZ （Haruna）

Hi! I’m Haruna Nagasawa in Central Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand. First, I’ll talk about my host family. My host family has six members, including me. I have two host mothers, an older host sister, a host aunt and a host grandmother. I live at home with my two host mothers, Kerri and Tammy, three big dogs and a cat. Sometimes my host sister, Devon, comes home. She is learning Japanese, so we help each other. I like studying with her. My host mothers are very kind. Tammy tells me words that I can’t understand when I study English and do my homework. She will go to Canada in about two weeks, so I’m very sad. Kerry tells me meaning of English words and helps me, too. And when I was worried about my friend, she listened to my feelings and my thought and gave me some advice. The advice helped me and I got to have fun in my school life. My host family is very kind and they treat me like a real family member. I also consider them like my family.
At my birthday party, my host grandmother, Nana, my host aunt, Aunty and Devon came home. Kerri made a strawberry cheesecake. It was so delicious. They gave me some presents. My friends gave me some presents at school, too. I was very glad. It was a memory I will never forget.
I could make many other memories in the two months I have been here. I’ll write about a sad memory and a happy memory. I want to end this essay with a happy memory, so I’ll write about the sad memory first. About one month ago, a storm came to New Zealand. My house’s internet access had been down for two days, so I couldn’t text my family and friends and watch movies on Netflix. And there was no running water one day and we couldn’t use drinking water for two weeks. When there was no running water, it was difficult to use the toilet. The life was like camping. I couldn’t go to school for about one week. It was very sad because we couldn’t meet friends and talk with them, but I could spend time in my house with my host family. I watched many movies with them on DVD and went to the supermarket with Kerri. I was surprised because there were no eggs, bread, nor frozen chicken. It was like masks when the coronavirus epidemic broke out. It was a difficult life, but I could have rare experiences here.
Finally, I’ll write about a happy memory. My school had Athletics Day. It was my first school event in New Zealand. There are four house colors: blue, yellow, red and green. My house color is blue. In Japan, we wear our sports uniform and a head band only. However, in New Zealand, many students wear clothes of the house color and paint their face or body. I painted my face and legs. I did discus and gumboot throw, and so on. These were difficult for me because they were new to me. However, I could talk with many students and I could be myself. Usually, I become shy and I can’t talk

the way I want to, but I could speak to many students by myself. It was very enjoyable a day!!
I can’t speak and understand English well yet, but I could make friends, so I believe in myself and I will continue to try many things!! I’d like my family to see my growth!!

こんにちは!私はセントラルハークスベイにいる長澤春奈です。はじめに私のホストファミリーについて話し ます。私のホストファミリーは私を含め 6 人です。2 人のホストマザー、ホストシスター、ホストアント(叔 母)とホストグランドマザーです。私は 2 人のホストマザーの Kerri と Tammy と 3 匹の犬と 1 匹の猫と 暮らしています。時々、ホストシスターの Devon が家に来ます。彼女は日本語を学んでいるのでお互い に助け合っています。私は彼女と勉強するのが好きです。ホストマザーたちはとても優しいです。Tammy は私が英語の勉強をしている時や宿題をしている時に私が理解できない単語について教えてくれます。彼 女はあと 2 週間くらいでカナダに行くのでとても悲しいです。Kerri も英単語の意味を教えてくれたり、手 助けしてくれたりします。そして私が友達について悩んでいる時に、私の気持ちや考えを聞いてくれ、アドバ イスをくれました。そのアドバイスのおかげで、私は学校生活を楽しく過ごせるようになりました。私のホストフ ァミリーはとても優しく、私を本当の家族のように接してくれます。また私も家族のように思っています。
私のバースデーパティーには、ホストグランドマザーの Nana、ホストアントの Aunty、そして Devon が 家に来てくれました。Kerri がいちごのチーズケーキを作ってくれました。それはとてつもなく美味しかったで す。私に誕生日プレゼントもくれました。また学校で友達もプレゼントをくれました。とても嬉しかったです。こ の思い出は一生忘れません。
私は約 2 ヶ月で他にもたくさんの思い出ができました。その中の悲しい思い出と楽しかった思い出につい て書きます。エッセイは嬉しい思い出で終わらせたいので、先に悲しい思い出について書きます。約 1 ヶ月 前に、ニュージーランドにハリケーンがやってきました。私の家のインターネットの接続は切れて、家族や友達 にメッセージを送ることや Netflix で映画を見ることができませんでした。そして一日水が出ず、2 週間飲 料水として使うことができませんでした。トイレをするのも大変でした。この生活はキャンプ生活みたいでし た。1 週間くらい学校も行けませんでした。友達と会えないし、しゃべれないのはとても悲しかったですが、ホ ストファミリーと家で時間を過ごすことができました。私は DVD でホストファミリーとたくさんの映画を見たり、 Kerri とスーパーに行ったりしました。スーバーには卵、パン、冷凍チキンがなく、とても驚きました。まるでコ ロナが流行した時のマスクのようでした。大変な生活でしたが、レアな体験ができました。
最後に、楽しかった思い出について話します。学校でアスレチックデーがありました。4 つのハウスカラー (青、黄色、赤、緑)があって、私のハウスカラーは青色です。日本で私たちは体操服を着て鉢巻をする だけですが、ニュージーランドではたくさんの生徒がハウスカラーの服を着たり、顔や体にペイントをしたりしま す。私は顔と足にペイントをしました。私は円盤投げと長靴投げをしました。私にとって初めてのことだったの で難しかったです。しかし、私はたくさんの子と話すことができ、自分らしくいられました。普段は、恥ずかしく て思い通りに話しかけられないですが、自分から話すことができました。とても楽しめた一日でした!!

私はまだうまく英語を話せませんし、理解できないこともありますが、友達もできました。だから自分を信 じていたくさんのことに挑戦します!家族へ 私の成長を楽しみにしていてください!!
